About me

Dr. Susanne Marx

Education

I was born in Marburg in 1970. I graduated from the Philippinum High School in 1989. After a year abroad in England and France, I studied law in Heidelberg and Geneva from 1990 to 1995, completing my legal studies in 1996 with the first state examination in law.

During my studies, I worked for several years as a research assistant at the Institute for German and European Commercial and Corporate Law at the University of Heidelberg under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Peter Hommelhoff.

Following my first state examination in law, I completed my required legal clerkship at the Heidelberg District Court, with internships at the law firms of Schilling, Zutt & Anschütz in Mannheim and Hengeler Mueller in Frankfurt am Main and New York.

I then studied US business law at New York University (NYU), where I obtained the title ‘Master of Laws (in Corporation Law)’ (LL.M.) in 1999.

After passing the New York bar exam, I was admitted to the  New York State bar at the beginning of 2000 and have since been admitted to practice as an attorney-at-law in the State of New York. However, I do not practise U.S. law.

After returning from New York, I wrote my doctoral thesis on a comparative law topic in the field of accounting under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Peter Hommelhoff.

First career phase: International law firm, Frankfurt and London

In 2001, I was admitted to the German Bar and started working as an associate for the international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Frankfurt am Main. I worked at Freshfields, with several interruptions due to parental leave, until 2013.

My work initially focused on mergers and acquisitions and capital markets law, and later mainly on bank regulatory law.

From 2004 to 2006, I worked in the London office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and at the investment bank Goldman Sachs International (GSI) in London as part of a secondment.

Second career phase: Family law and mediation in my own law firm

Starting in 2012, I completed additional studies at the University of Hagen to become a specialist lawyer in family law and at the same time began training as a mediator at the Frankfurt Institute for Conflict Counselling and Mediation (IKOM). I successfully completed both additional studies in 2014.

Since September 2014, I have worked in my own law firm in Königstein im Taunus, initially under the name ‘Mediation Law Firm Marx’. My main focus is meanwhile on the traditional work as a lawyer in the field of family law. However, I still offer mediation in suitable cases.

In 2024, I was recognized as a ‘Specialist Lawyer in Family Law’ by the Frankfurt am Main Bar Association on the basis of my proven theoretical and practical skills.

Personal

I am married and the mother of three children, some of whom are already adults. I enjoy spending my free time with family and friends in Germany and the United States.

I have always been fascinated by family stories, in life as well as in film and literature. Families are the core of every society and at the same time a mirror of it. They shape us in many ways. Disruptions in the family structure can unsettle us just as much as they liberate us.

Putting my legal knowledge and negotiation experience at the service of my clients and standing by them in times of crisis, empathically and with a willingness to listen, is a matter close to my heart and a daily privilege.
